Characteristics of a Follower of Christ – Mark 10: 32-45

Main Idea: Followers of Christ are called to model Christ by living a life marked by humility and service. Followers of Christ are to reject self-serving ambition. (v. 35-37) Followers of Christ are called to embrace the path of suffering. (v. 38-40) Followers of Christ are to serve others instead of ruling over them. (v. 41-44) Jesus modeled and purchased this life for us. (v. 45)

Barriers & Blessings to the Kingdom – Mark 10:17-31

Main Idea: The key to eternal life is surrendering all to Jesus and trusting God’s power to save. Sincerity isn’t the same as surrender. (v. 17-20) What you hold onto can keep you from following Jesus. (v. 21-22) Salvation is impossible through man, but possible through God. (v. 23-27) God’s Kingdom reverses earthly values and rewards true sacrifice. (v. 28-31)

Mark 10:13-16

Discipleship is the process of becoming like Jesus, so making disciples come from doing what Jesus did. Jesus fills empty hands. The Kingdom of God is for those who come to Jesus with empty hands.

Mark 9:42-50 – Four Growth Points in the Christian Life

Main Idea: True discipleship guards the spiritual well-being of others and ourselves so that we can be effective for the Kingdom of God. Protect the weak – Guard those who are vulnerable in their faith. Pursue Holiness – Remove anything that threatens your walk with Christ. Persevere Through Refinement – Embrace trials as God’s purifying work. Preserve Your Witness – Live faithfully as salt in a corrupt world.

Mark 9:38-41 – Man’s Response vs. God’s Desires

Main Idea: The kingdom of God extends far beyond our circles and cannot be confined to our circles. The problem: A narrow view of God’s work. (v. 38) The reality: God works through many. (v. 39-40) The goal: A shared commitment to God’s mission. (v. 41)

Mark 9:30-37 – The Model and The Marks of True Greatness

Main Idea: Christ defined true greatness through humility and service. Christ modeled true greatness through humility. True greatness doesn’t come through our own ambition. True greatness comes through an attitude of service. True greatness is shown through our own insignificance.

Mark 9:14-29 – Five Keys To Faith

Main Idea: Our faith in Christ must be rooted in an unwavering belief that He will fulfill His promises. Faith does not work apart from Christ. Faith is needed in dire circumstances. Faith is not a half-hearted, half-trusting hope. Faith at times coexists with disbelief in our hearts. Faith is a full dependance and trust that the Lord will work and fulfill His promises.

Mark 8:31-9:1

Main Idea: Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection was a necessity to redeem humanity, therefore He is worthy of having our lives centered around Him. Christ’s suffering was a necessity for our Redemption. Our own self-denial is a necessity for following Jesus. As a result, believer’s will experience the necessary coming of Jesus’ glory.

Mark 8:27-30 – Two Realities to Following Jesus

Main idea: The turning point of following Christ is a clear, personal confession that Jesus is the Christ. Reality #1: Many people have the wrong understanding of who Jesus is. Reality #2: Following Jesus is an act of faith recognizing Jesus as the Christ.

Mark 8:22-26 – The Blind Man at Bethsaida

Main Idea: True growth in knowing and understanding Jesus happens progressively in someone’s life through the act of following Him. Spiritual blindness has impacted everyone. Initial understanding of Jesus begins incomplete and blurry. The full clarity of the majesty and glory of Jesus will occur in the end.
